Reviews of Southwood Care Centre in Calgary

This care home is lower than a 1*! My mother had 5 falls resulting in broken bones over a span of 4 years there. The negligence of the staff was the reason for all 5 falls. Mainly, the staff would not come when residents rang the bell for assistance. I saw how they 'trained' new residents by not responding to the bell and poor new residents would be calling out for hours and just be ignored. Worse than that is the management! They allowed a new male resident who was BULLY and mentally unstable to remain in the unit and continue to harm and threaten to harm other residents in particular one sweet little old lady of 90+ years whose only fault was leaving her tea cup on a table across from the bully's room. He was allowed to yell, swear and trip and hit the other resident without consequences and provide an example for another resident with those tendencies who then started doing the same thing. Even going to police could not make any changes in management policy which was to politely remind the bully of policy - after he had already done the damage. This happened every day and several times a day. I went every avenue that I could through Intercare to the police to ombudsman and AHC with no help! The solution that management decided, was to move the sweet little old lady upstairs to the dementia ward. Poor dear had no one but a guardian who agreed with managements recommendation as she had no knowledge of the circumstance. Another negative about this unit was that there was no unit manager on the ward but office in the basement so staff were not watched nor supervised. It was apparent whenever one walked in and a couple of times on weekends, there were NO STAFF TO BE FOUND. The supposed RN on duty came walking in 30 min past shift change and when asked she said she was just on a break. Management kept promoting lowest paid staff to unit managers to save money. Even after all this information, transition took 2 years to transfer my mother out of there!
