I hired Roberto to patch and paint two apartments in August of 2021. He quoted $3000 and won the bid. After a day and a half of work on the first apartment, he contacted me to let me know that he had “screwed up the quote” and needed an extra $1400 or he was walking off the job. I told him that I understood and that I was willing to cover half of his “screw up” including an additional $100. Bringing the total to $3800 plus tax. He refused to finish. The next day, I caved and said I would agree to the $4400. This is when he insisted on the extra $700 (Half of the $1400 increase) as well as another $1100 (half of the remaining $2200) before he would start the second apartment. I told him that wasn't how contractors work.The entire job is $4400, so $2200 up front and the rest upon completion. He was essentially trying to split the apartments into 2 contracts. It was also evident that he would just quit midway through the second one and take me for more money. This man is very dishonest. He started an odd conversation about how honest he was and how he had been wrongfully accused of stealing from Home Depot in Guelph. (Red flag, much?) I fed him for free from my pizzeria (which is also in the building) on breaks, including ice cream! To top it all off, the work is sloppy. Paint all over baseboards and the patch work was not even sanded flat. Avoid dealing with him or it will cost you.
