shady company that’s unreliable and unresponsive

I have to caution you from renting with this company. My son didn't end up moving in as he changed cities for school. We paid a last month's deposit upon signing as well as monthly rent until we had completed a lease reassignment which was approved. We were released of all obligations and told a refund would be coming for the last month's rent as the new tenant had submitted his LMR. What we didn't know is they were supposed to leave our deposit on file and have the new tenant pay last month to us. They are now refusing to pay us and have lied to the Rental Housing Enforcement Unit saying that the new tenant didn't pay last month rent. I have it in writing that he did but have to retain a lawyer to get our money back. Rental company is holding 2 last month's deposits and refusing to take my calls or reply to my emails.

I do not recommend Smart Living as it is not a smart decision to live with six strangers with no reassurance of safety. Last night, two roommates tried to get into my room to assault me (I have a witness and several texts messages proving this). They angrily yelled and knocked at my door after I had fallen asleep and tried to open my door several times. I was so scared I couldn’t stop shaking or move for several hours and left the house extremely scared for my safety the following day.
I filed a police report and emailed Smartliving. Smartliving said they would look into the situation. I do not know what that means. They also said they could not reimburse me for the month because I did not give them a chance to resolve the situation. So, they expect victims of harassment, bullying and attempt of assault to stay in a dangerous situation so they can give you your money back. So, I am a traumatized victim, and I also lose money for not staying in a dangerous place. So, once again, the system fails the victims and helps the bullies.
Ps: A week after the incident and Smartliving has done nothing about it. The bullies are still in the house with 2 other terrified roommates that keep texting me wondering what is Smartliving doing about the bullies. I got proof of all this but Smartliving does nothing about it.
PS2: Smartliving emailed the victims of bullying in the unit to let them know that they do not have to be Best friends with the other tenants.🤦🏻‍♀️
DO NOT recommend Smartliving at all!
